A duo that has transformed the entire Jazz, Funk, R&B and Hip-Hop community!
Ethel Calhoun is the sister of brilliant drummer Will Calhoun (Living Colour, Jungle Funk) and her mother only allowed the two brothers to become professional musicians. But Ethel, this terrific talent was still unstoppable.
“I saw Ethel Calhoun in the Abyssinian Baptist
Church in Harlem; she sang the first solo part
in this magnificent choir. It was so intimate,
that all people around were stunned.
And I invited her to Europe. “(Paul Zauner)
Ethel Calhoun is the sister of brilliant drummer Will Calhoun (Living Colour, Jungle Funk) and her mother only allowed the two brothers to become professional musicians. But Ethel, this terrific talent was still unstoppable. As late bloomers she was inducted into the world renowned Alvin Ailey Dance Company. She loves the music of James Brown, Duke Ellington, the funk. Her soul is filled with this whole musical artistic brew from Harlem New York, she sings the hell out of it, dancing and hitting the heart of the listener.
With the release of the James Brown biopic “Get on up” in Europe in October 2014, the music and the funk of an era will be particularly present in press and media. In a very simple, but unusual line-up this quartet defines the new Groove. Blues, Soul, Jazz and Funk are tensely negotiated between Ethel Calhoun, the sweeping Hammond organ playing of Raphael Wressnig (“Best Organ Player 2013” nominee at the Downbeat Critics Poll) and the grandiose sounds of trombonist Paul Zauner. Based on her unique voice with fantastic rhythm, when Ethel Calhoun sings this is authentic, deep, touching, a somewhat spiritual experience – and then she dances terrifically, too. When she sings, people start to dance. Ethel Calhoun performs no cover, she gives home to “James’ spirit”! This is no less than the start of an awesome career. Everyone who could witness Paul Zauner’s introduction of this year’s Grammy®-winner Gregory Porter to Europe only some three or four years ago will know which sort of surprising discoveries from the US this heart-blood jazzman can find and bring to Europe for the first time! Ethel is one of those rare “hidden gems”!
